Talus comes to us from Sigil Silken Windhounds in Indiana.  He is a part of their recent genetic diversity litter, "Project Mutant".  Talus (formerly Forge) has a bright future as a sport prospect puppy who will compete in AOK9 and LCI running events as well as Nosework and 4-H with our daughter Lexi.  We can't wait to see what this boy has in store for his future.

Information about Silken Windhound genetic diversity projects

Talus is a Genetic Diversity Project Dog for the Silken Windhound breed.  This means that although he is not a purebred dog, he is a purpose bred mix between a registered Silken Windhound and a Whippet.  Most Silken Windhounds, like many other pure bred dogs are prone to having a high Coefficient of Inbreeding or COI, but unlike other breeds, we cannot help bring these percentages down by importing a dog from Europe or Asia.  As with other rare breeds we are limited to the dogs available.  Unlike other breeds however, our studbook is not yet closed to diversity projects laid out by the International Silken Windhound Society.

"The primary goal of the Genetic Diversity Program is to provide the framework for a successful, long−term plan for breed survival. The mission of the Genetic Diversity Program is to add healthy genetic material from non−Silken Windhound dogs to expand genetic diversity, thereby maintaining and improving the overall health of the Silken Windhound breed." ~International Silken Windhound Society

We are excited to take a part in this project by providing a loving home, and helping Talus unlock his potential as a sports dog.  When he reaches adulthood Talus will undergo all breed health testing and will be evaluated for his structure and temperament..  If all goes well he will go on to produce a future generation of Silkens helping to diversify the Silken Windhound genepool.
